Wood boat building is one of the easiest way to get started in building a boat. You just need the basic woodworking skills along with basic set of tools and you’ll be set to get started. For this very reason, even total beginner will be able to build a boat.
In fact, I would even strongly suggest that a beginner in the craft of boat building should get started with easier plans. And wood boat building happens to be one of the simplest boat to finish. You just need some serious planning for successful completion of the project.
There are things you have to go over in order to get the project going. Some aspects of building your own boat you need to consider are:
Budget and Materials
Speaking from experience, I find it easy to start with a project if you have a definite budget in mind. Or at least, an earmark of the amount you’re willing to spend for your boat. This will help you determine all the other aspect of the project.
An example is the kind of materials and the type of wood you’re going to use. When you have an amount you can work around with, it’ll be much easier to choose the kind of materials you will be using as there are many options. Likewise, you also need to decide on the specific size of the boat you are going to build.
Boat Design
There are many boat design you can choose from. Boat come in a variety of designs and sizes. To be able to choose the most suitable design, you need to consider the main purpose for the boat. This will largely determine the type of boat you will be building.
With that said, the most common type boats you could do well to consider are dories, jon boats or dinghies. These are the type of boat design which works well with diverse purposes. These are also the boat types which even a beginner can easily build with proper planning.
Wood Boat Building Plans
To successfully finish a project to its completion, you need to use a very good wood boat building plans. Plans not only plays a vital role in the construction process. It also helps you even during the planning stage.
Personally I only consider plans with a thorough and step by step instruction. Aside from this, you should know that plans with elaborate graphics helps tremendously as well.
