what kind of engineering should i choose to design boats?

i am a competative water skier and i have always been interested in boats. what kind of engineering should i look into to design a boats hull?

    naval engineering. i think it is a specialization of mechanical engineering.

    Naval architecture / Mechanical Engineering – and the design process would be centered on the study of fluid mechanics.

    The discipline you are looking for is called Navel Architecture and Marine Engineering. Mostly it concerns itself with design of ship hulls and ship power plants. Generally one would expect to study seakeeping qualities, internal arrangement, and resistance and propulsion of ship hulls.

    I think you want to look for a program accredited by ABET. Any good program will have a large ship model towing tank and the appropriate shops and instruments for teaching and research.

    You can probably easily earn a second degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace as there is probably significant overlap with these fields.
