What are some devices that me and my friend could build to float on a lake?

Me and my friend love to build things and testing them. Last year we built a raft and went rafting on a lake.. Lots of fun. This year we want to *build* something else to go on in a lake.. Any ideas? We are thinking of a canoe or something but any other suggestions?

Not many things come to mind that can “build” that are seaworthy, besides a raft, a boat, a canoe. Build a real canoe by hollowing out a tree trunk like the natives do.

Think outside the box and build something that is not normally made for water. It will be more interesting. Make like a floating palace or similar. I know it wont be 5 star but fun still. Floating deck chairs would be cool. You could lay and sun bake while you float.

When I was a lot younger, a bunch of my friends took planks of wood and a whole lot of 4 litre plastic milk containers. They somehow stuck the milk containers together side by side and then tied them onto the underside of planks of wood. They made a successful raft that they sailed down a small river on. Two kids sat on it and it didn’t even sink. Mind you, they all know how to swim. So if anything happened, at least they were able to swim ashore.

I suggest you wear lifejackets, regardless whether you swim or not.

Some other people built a house on a raft with the same concept. It looked funny – like something out of Huckleberry Finn if ever. They even had a ‘fishing hole’ in the middle. Mind you, that raft was about three times the size of my friends’ raft. It looked like a house floating on a river. Now being much older, thinking back on it is making me laugh. I remember the “No Girls” sign on it.

Well. . . . pontoon boats use huge hollow metal “water wings” to keep afloat. Why not try using something similar, then mounting a deck to it. . . . or Plastic like they use for water bikes.

Last summer for the 1st time we saw a huge inflatable water trampoline (with a slide). That was neat.

    Good Luck!

    We put a bunch of pallets and styrofoam together once, and nailed an old couch to it. Was like fishing in your living room. . . . . . . . . git r done. . . . . . . . .

you can build a small pontoon with pvc pipe, using large pipe and filling with packing peanuts and capping the ends
