Annapolis is the capital of Maryland and an important Chesapeake Bay port. The city is famous for its history, beauty, architecture, schools, art, seafood, shops and harbor. Annapolis was once an important shipping and commercial fishing port. Today the port is a top destination for sailboaters, shoppers and vacationers.
The city is a mix of government facilities, legal professions, educational institutions, art shops, local seafood restaurants, and boating-related businesses. Its waterfront is a key attraction to the city and a vital component of area culture.
The harbor serves as the hub of waterfront district and is among the most beautiful of American ports. The area has undergone several phases of development prior to its current design. For its latest reconstruction, the Annapolis City Dock has been nationally recognized, receiving the Outstanding Small Project Award for 2009 from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The Annapolis waterfront and harbor is considered to be one of the top power boating and sailing destinations of the Atlantic Coast. A major attraction to boaters of all types are a pair of annual events. Each October, the United States Sailboat Show and the United States Powerboat Show are held in the harbor of Annapolis. The events are the oldest and largest in-water shows in the industry, attracting hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of power boating and sailing enthusiasts.
Other fun things to do in Annapolis include boat tours, which take visitors on a tour of the harbor and into the Severn River for a spectacular view of the Naval Academy, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, sailboats underway and other attractions.
Travelers can also go fishing with a Maryland fishing guide. Guides from Annapolis fish for Maryland’s famous striped bass, known locally as “rockfish” as well as other species such as white perch, flounder and croaker.
Other attractions along waterfront include shops and art galleries of the area. The city is famous for its nautical art, with items for everyone that loves boats, nature, fishing or saltwater.
