STAR WARS SHIP QUESTION: I am helping my son build a Pine Wood Derby Car and he wants to design like a Star?

I am working on helping my son build a Pinewood derby car and he wants to design it as a Star Wars ship. I am not very handy but can get by. What is the easiest ship to make out of a block of wood? The maximum demsions are 7″(length) x 2-15/16″(width) x 3 1/16″(height). Any ideas, help, and pictures would be greatly appreciated. I would like him to be able to paint most when I am done carving it. He is 6 years old and is a good painter. Thanks in advance.

  1. Maya`s dad says:

a Y wing fighter might be easiest. Found on the the empire strikes back I believe. an X wing might be too wide but it would be an easy build

  2. Some one says:

Dint make it too short or it might go out of control when it goes down the track, i use to have 4 of them when i was in cub scouts and we did pinewood derby, my dads car was too short and it spun out of control and went crazy down the track, he did win a trophy for craziest car though.

    A-wing
Probably the easiest. Atleast as far as ships go.

I think this one looks pretty easy to carve out of that rectangle of balsa wood. Your son could even help. . . especially smoothing the front section. It would be pretty good for the race also, because most of the weight would be on those back wheels. For the top “fin” thing, you could probably use some plastic piece, but I don’t remember the rules for the race, so check first. If not, just leave it off.

those would probably be the easiest

though if you’re willing to do other SciFi stuff Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica have some good ship designs, like that Viper pic the other answeror posted

If you did the death star you wouldn’t even have to bother with wheels. but seriously, It may not be as easy but a B-Wing is
just asking to come out of a block of wood just Google
    B-Wing
