Book 5: Sea Nymph and Open Sea
81-82Second council of the gods. Note the reference to Athena’s plan. Hermes is to order Kalypso to send him home.
84-85 Hermes delivers the message.
•When was the first council? Are there any real differences from the first one? i know this one
•Why Hermes? Think about his functions. iknow this one
•What is the etymology of Kalypso? i know ithis one
•Try to comment on the description of her domain. Is she a good hostess? Note her “feminist” complaint.
•Why has Homer kept Odysseus from us for 4 books? iknow this one
85-88 Kalypso agrees, tells O to build a boat, and reassures him when he suspects treachery. The next day he departs.
•What is O’s first utterance in the epic and what does it say about his attitude to other humans and to the gods? Why is he like this?
•Why does he reject Kalypso’s offer of immortality?
•Does this situation remind you of any other myths? Can they guide your interpretation of this episode?
88-90 As O sights the island of Skheria after 17 days, the home of the Phaiakians (Phaeacians), Poseidon wrecks his boat.
•Why?
90-95 The sea-goddess Leukothea (Ino) saves him, but in his near-paranoia, he almost rejects her help; again, as you read, think about how he has reached this point. Athena stills the storm, and he reaches the coast, finds shelter and falls asleep.
•Note the similes in this book; are they different from the similes in the Iliad?. To what is O being compared? Why are these comparisons made? i know hte similes but now what it is compared too.
•In this book you read (at least) two indications of the seasons. What time of year do you think it is? (This is important for understanding some of the underlying mythic patterns).
I don’t get the book, can you guys help me on it.
