How long does it take to get from a west coast port in the U.K to NYC on a ship? Me and my mum are planning to go but she’s absolutley terrified of flying. Also i heard it costs about £2000?!?!
Anyone recommend it?

I know it is not a West coast port, but from South Hampton to New York the time at sea is 5 days and 15 hours.
For an inside cabin the price is $794. 31 plus $33. 37 taxes. That is $827. 68 USD per person. $830. X 2 people = $1,660 USD. Using a conversion rate of:
1 USD = 0. 663759 GBP 1 GBP = 1. 50657 USD
$1,660 USD = 1,101. 84 GBP for One Way Tickets.
Double that for a return trip.
NOTE: The cruise line reserves the right to impose a fuel supplement of up to $9 per person per day on all passengers if the NYMEX oil price exceeds $70 per barrel, even if the fare has already been paid in full. Fares are subject to change based on availability.
Your estimate is reasonably accurate.
I can maybe find a better price for you. I just looked up something easy, and approximate.
That is for one voyage, booking now, sailing April 20, 2009.
Would I recommend it? Yes I would, but know that I am a travel agent.
EDITED TO ADD:
* Don’t listen to conjecture and off the cuff opinions.
* The Queen Mary 2 is not the only cruise ship sailing the North Atlantic Route. There are several other options.
* Cunard is not the only cruise line sailing the North Atlantic Route. There are several other options.
* The price I quoted may indeed be a bit low, but it is accurate. I am a travel agent. Not only is it our job to find the lowest prices for the customer, it is also our responsibility to offer the best value for your money. As I wrote earlier, it is perhaps not the lowest price possible. It was the easiest to look up for a quick ball park figure. I maybe able to find a better price.
* The link provided for Cunnard, has some of the information; not all of it; only that made available to the public.
* You can check with Cunard, and all the rest, or have a good travel agent do the work for you, spend no time, get a lower price, at no cost to you.
Check with Cunard Lines. I think the Queen Mary 2 is now the only ocean liner traveling the north Atlantic route these days. That price may be a bit low, too. After a quick check it looks like I am right about the QM2. She sails from Southampton and arrives in 6 days. The link below has all of the information for Cunard.
Hope you don’t get seasick. Transatlantic crossings can be rough sailing, not like sailing in the Medeterranian or the Caribbean. It’s an experience, though. And since it’s a cruise, sure to be enjoyable. I have a friend who has done it a few times and she says the seas can get quite rough. it usually takes a week to ten days. I have not done it myself but it’s on my list
Remember that the fare includes all of your meals for the time you’re on the ship. £2000 seems expensive, you can go cheaper if you take an inside cabin or go on the off-season.
Also, if you’re not picky I’ve heard you can book passage on a cargo ship, but I don’t know anyone personally who has done it. It’s nothing like a cruise, but a cheap way to go.
