How far is it from port phillip bay to Melbourne via motor boat, sailing and swimming?

Thinking of getting to city via Port Phillip Bay as part of my exercise plan.

The City of Melbourne is built around the northern part of Port Phillip Bay. So which suburb are you thinking of travelling from?

Swimming would be out of the question. Melbourne is right on Port Phillip Bay but the foreshore is full of shipping docks and busy shipping routes. No one swims there.
