How do I go about designing and building my own ship/yacht?

I need to know about metal fatigue, structural design points and legal requirments to go to sea. Anything you have on ocean going ships will help.

And why not!! Apply to the British Admiralty – Naval Section and ask them for a copy of the plans for Ark Royal. You might as well start at the deep end. Good Luck, let us all know how you are getting along. . . . . . . . . . . .

Well, Jim Bob, why don’t you start with something simple, like maybe a civil war ironclad? I’m sure you could find plans in a library or on the internet. Pretty soon, you’ll be capsizing with the best of them off the Atlantic coast.

well, first off, you accumulate a really huge pile of money, then shape it into something that looks like a boat, then add more money for the fittings and fixtures, then dump even more money into it for fuel and crew, and you’ve got yourself a yacht! Good luck with that.

This, I’m afraid, is not the place to be looking. What you’re asking, essentially, is “how do I go about designing and building my own 7,000 sq/ft house?” without any formal training. I’m not saying that you’re dumb, and it sounds like you have some schooling or experience with ships – but yacht building is a far cry from being a hobby.

I’ve been around ships of all kinds for 25 years and owned one kind or another for 17 years. I would start learning about structural engineering, marine engineering, naval arcitecture, welding, and carpentery. For the design phase, I recommend having someone draw up the plans for it. You tell them what you want and they’ll tell you what you can do. Then run the plans by the Coast Guard. They’re kinda like the cities’ building inspector. They’ll give you a thumbs up or thumbs down. But they will need to inspect the ship throughout its construction. I guess before you start anything, contact the coast guard.

i would suggust going to trinty yachts, or another shipbuiler, and tell them what u want and how much u can spend.

Try this forum, it covers everything from making the hull to final finishing, best of all the plans are made to suit general light engineering skills you could learn at college or nightschool. http://groups. yahoo. com/group/origamiboats/
