How can anyone give credibility to the Noah’s Ark story?

I think the Bible is a very fine collection of tall-tales, but this is just too far fetched.

1) Someone built a boat big enough to hold every 2 of every animal on earth
2) It took 300 years for the guy to build the boat. Given the human lifespan theres no way someone can live 300 years let alone have the strength to build a boat with primitive tools at the age of 300.
3) In just 40 days of rain the whole world was flooded (Is there even enough water on Earth to flood the whole world?)
4) Somehow the animals could stay fed without eating each other
5) Miracously the 2 animals that were chosen managed to replenish the world with their species
6) Apparently the world got un-flooded. Where did the water go?
7) God wasn’t thinking too fair either with this fine plan of his, he forgot to spare the people that lived in places where Noah couldn’t warn.
@Trust me:
Did someone say plate tectonics?
@Trust Me:
And you claim we came from dirt. Much better or realistic than bacteria in a pond?

There, simple. The flood story is true and you can’t prove me wrong because if you try, I’ll plug my ears, insult you, or simply say that you’re answer is silly and impossible.

Believe it or not, its your choice.
Yet your side claims all live started as bacteria in some pond scum. Yep, that’s what you claim.

The prevalence across cultures of a deluge story leads me to think that there may indeed have been some sort of flood. As with any mythos, there can be elements of truth.

The account of Genesis is Jewish folklore. Nothing in Genesis is written in the first person and it is filled with animals given anthropomorphic features. Which are signs that it was oral tradition written after the characters lived.

The same thing can be said about Santa Claus visiting all children in world in one night. It’s bogus, but it makes a good story.

You can choose to discount everything said in the Bible. This story obviously bothers you.

Almost as unbelievable is the teaching that all of the planets, stars, galaxies, solar systems, plant life, and animal life “just happened”. Now THAT is far fetched
    :-)

You truly should read the story before you form your opinion.
Who did Noah warn? You wont find that story in any Bible. . . so first we read the story and then we critique the story.

  13. Buddy_Lee_Hombre_de_accion says:

I’ve studied this subject since I was five years old. I’ve read writings from monks from hundreds of years ago, studied geology, spoken with Rabbis, studied ancient Hebrew, etc.

Here’s a summary of what I have found.
    1. The Bible literally says the water covered the land (not entire Earth).
    2. It wasn’t just Noah, it was him and his entire family. Also, the assumption would be that if the lifespan was that long that people wouldn’t age as fast. So at age 200 Noah may have had the body and mind of a 40 year old for all we know.
    3. Building a boat isn’t that difficult. Now building a ship that large wouldn’t necessarily be difficult. If you have wood (we don’t know what wood he used because the name doesn’t exist anymore), a way to change it’s shape, a way to cut the wood, etc. you are in business. Civilizations before Noah were making more advanced creations.
    4. If the flood only covered the immediate area, Noah could fit all of the animals on a ship that large. Also, don’t forget that Noah was ordered to bring 7 of every clean animal. This way they had food and so did the carnivores.
    5. The more I read the more I see you haven’t read the story. The water came not only from rain but from the Earth. Likewise the water evaporated and the Bible claims that the Earth opened up and took in some of the water.
    6. National Geographic has had multiple articles and shows about this matter. A couple years ago they announced that indeed a catastrophic flood covered all of the land in the area during the time of Noah. It’s a fact that multiple civilizations record this flood occurence. But just a year ago National Geographic announced that new findings show that the flood wasn’t large enough to cover mountain peaks. Not even close. So there at least was a large flood due to earthquakes, a large land mass going into the water, a huge tsunami, etc.

edit: Least of. . . . . actually you miss the point. Think of it this way. When God said he’d give Abraham’s descendents all of the land before Abraham, was he talking about the entire planet or just Israel? Same with the flood. Was it just all of the land there or was it the entire planet? There’s a big difference.
edit2: Least of. . . . now I think you’re missing the point on purpose. So heaven = the entire universe. If you don’t understand how silly that sounds, you’ll never understand the Bible nor pretty much any thorough answer. Not only is that silly, but there is a difference between “heavens” and “heaven”. C’mon, do I seriously have to waste my time explaining simple concepts to people today? In this question I’ve already had to explain that water also comes out of the Earth.

Nevermind. When Noah tilled the Earth as the Bible claims, it must mean that he tilled Wisconsin, Antartica, New Jersey, China, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Australia, France, etc. I guess I just need to learn English.

  14. *Blessed* says:

Well, I, for one, believe that the flood was regional, not global, as most suggest. But, for the sake of argument, here goes:

    1) Someone built a boat big enough to hold every 2 of every animal on earth
Land animals, sure. And? I mean, he DID have 300 years, right?
    2) It took 300 years for the guy to build the boat. Given the human lifespan theres no way someone can live 300 years let alone have the strength to build a boat with primitive tools at the age of 300.
Well, if you believe the Bible, then you would believe that some people lived to be 700, 800, even 900 years old. So why not?
    3) In just 40 days of rain the whole world was flooded (Is there even enough water on Earth to flood the whole world?)
Most of Nashville flooded in like 2 days. So, yeah. I believe it.
    4) Somehow the animals could stay fed without eating each other
Nowhere does it say that they didn’t eat each other. What makes you think they didn’t?
    5) Miracously the 2 animals that were chosen managed to replenish the world with their species
?? Huh?? It happens with endangered species. Why couldn’t it happen in the Bible?
    6) Apparently the world got un-flooded. Where did the water go?
Heard of evaporation? Or continental shift?
    7) God wasn’t thinking too fair either with this fine plan of his, he forgot to spare the people that lived in places where Noah couldn’t warn.
Noah wasn’t meant to warn anyone. God didn’t tell him to.

  15. Mark T says:

    God did it.
Noah built the vessel by faith and following God’s orders. He was ridiculed and made fun of. Certain people that God commended lived more than 500 years.
You said it rain. It rained. Some parts of the US it rains 1″ and we flood. Thank God we get less than 1″ at a time.
Staying fed was God’s job. When you belive in his power nothing can stand in your way.
As in point #5) Adam and Eve replenished the world with all of us.
The water created new growth and evaporated.
#7) Here God wanted to get rid of the bad choices man made.

  17. Janessa says:

Most of the story’s in the bible are ridiculous, but I agree that Noah’s Ark takes the cake.

  18. Val John says:

There was a different order before the flood. Noah’s grandfather lived over 900 years. Noah’s great grandfather was a prophet named Enoch who drew the righteous into a city called Zion and then God took Enoch and his city unto himself. The world was divided after the flood. The flood is mentioned in the traditions of other cultures, not just the biblical record. The animals were not selected two by two. I lived in the mountains where sea shells were found in the rocks. The world has changed greatly over time. We do not live with the purity of nature that was the heritage of Adam and Eve and their descendants. We are learning now how to extend life. Our life expectancy has doubled in the last few centuries. Perhaps we will live long enough to have the answers given us by the Creater Himself.

  19. Frizby says:

To understand it you have to understand it, and you clearly do not understand it. .

Let me give you an example from what the atheistic community regards as fact: According to evolution all life evolved from one organism, therefore at some point in time in the distant past according to current science there was less species in the past than there was at some point after. .

This means that if you can imagine an ark being built way back in the ancient past of evolution when there were only 100 different species on the entire world and a flood was going to occur, but only a few from each species group boarded the Ark we would still have every species on earth as we see today. .

Don’t confuse matters for yourself when even science supports the claim that every species on earth today is the result of just a few, if you don’t believe me just research and do the maths yourself, you’ll reach the same conclusions as I have. .

  20. Wasabe says:

I don’t pretend to know all the answers but here are some:
    1. Easy it was a 3 story ship, made to dimensions currently used by ocean liners, capacity?
two of each KIND would reproduce all the varieties within kinds that we have.
    2. If you read the Bible you see that before the flood people had a much longer life span, typically
    700 years.
    3. Not just rain, but the cloud canopy burst, and water came from within the earth.
    4. see # 1 (big compartmented ship)
    5. see #1
    6. didn’t happen in one day! it took time!
    7. Noah was warning them for 300 years right?
    8. Remains of a ship have been found on the top Mt Ararat (just where he landed)
    9. Why would any of this be too hard for God to do?
    10. Geological Evidence all over the world of a world-wide flood.
    11. Almost every major culture has the story of flood.
    12. Tons of evidence for anyone who is really seeking the truth, and not just an excuse
    to not believe.

  21. Pastor Art (((SFECU))) says:

    Question
How can anyone give credibility to the Noah’s Ark story?

Everything archaologists have found supports the story found in Genesis about that great flood.

Every human society on earth has a story about a flood and 8 people saved in a boat.

    1) Someone built a boat big enough to hold every 2 of every animal on earth

Yes, Noah and his three sons. And they took 2 of all animals and 7 each of animals which were fit for food. Which are described in the Bible as “Clean” animals.

    2) It took 300 years for the guy to build the boat. Given the human lifespan theres no way someone can live 300 years let alone have the strength to build a boat with primitive tools at the age of 300.

It only took about 100 years. Proving you need to go back and re-read Genesis.

    3) In just 40 days of rain the whole world was flooded (Is there even enough water on Earth to flood the whole world?)

Yes, which is why 78% of the earth is covered with oceans, an average of 2 miles deep.

    4) Somehow the animals could stay fed without eating each other

Yes. But they did eat some of the other animals, and some like rabbits reproduce rather quickly.

    5) Miracously the 2 animals that were chosen managed to replenish the world with their species

    Yes.

Remember that you believe that one amoeba populated the earth.

    6) Apparently the world got un-flooded. Where did the water go?

See my reply to question 3.

    7) God wasn’t thinking too fair either with this fine plan of his, he forgot to spare the people that lived in places where Noah couldn’t warn.

    God didn’t forget.

PS: The Ark has been found!
