It is true some of the new materials function better and are much lighter and possibly stronger
but i remember Beautiful mahogany boats, wooden tennis rackets, solid oak and cherry furniture
I love roll top desks etc. it seems everything now is missing that feel because apparently function out weighs the form

Yes,wood is one of the most beautiful things in this world. One only needs to go to an Amish settlement to be able to see the fine craftsman ship . Plastic will never do it justice. I once had a Lyman boat. Can’t hardly find one around anymore.
I agree. There is a wonderful magazine called Wooden Boat Publications which is published in New England that deals in speed boats that were handcrafted.
As a child I liked Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs. And what says spring better than the sound of a baseball being hit off a Hillrich-Bradsby wooden bat?
And lets not forget about the Christmas tree that God created.
I have a Hope chest and a roll-top desk that is made for dark cherry walnut and still in good shape too, I am very picky about anybody touching it even the kids and grandkids, they are not ever to go near it!! It had belong to my Mom side of the family and I like to make it last, they both have locks on them with a key too. . =)t
edit= I also remember a rocking horse once. .
Yes, many things, but mostly on cars and trucks. They have replaced metal and quality finishes with what my dad called ‘nothing better than tin foil and tissue paper!’ Artificial chrome and wood grain finishes are cheap interiors even in the luxury models.
It is true – they don’t make things like they used to.
Nor do they care, either.
Not only have too many trees been cut in the US and worldwide but the sun has become hotter and is drying up the water that the trees drink so they are dieing, in some countries where we imported certain woods from well the animals and people are stripping them for food even chewing on the bark, and the cost of wood has skyrocketed. So we were fortunate to have those nice things when and while we could.
When my parents passed I expected that I could get some of the old fantasticly ornate wooden furniture they owned and that I used English oil every week when I was a kid. But over the years they dried out and broke apart because no one was there to take care of the great pieces.
I noticed on my wooden spatchula you have to take great care that it doesn’t sit in water or the part that goes into the rubber gets soaked and molds.
I love wood and admire the craftsmanship of old objects. They truly improve with age.
I have some old wooden toys and cars that I treasure and can’t bring myself to give away yet. One of my favorite treasures is an old wooden school desk, seat in the front and a hinged desk on the back, that my mother left to me. She happened to be in East Texas when the one room school house that both she and my daddy had gone to when they were children was being torn down. They were selling the furnishings and she bought the desk that my dad had carved his initials into. . . OS. That old desk is probably at least 90 years old and still is in good shape.
Wood is pretty nice stuff. I’ve made furniture and utilitarian items of wood for years. It has character and feeling. It’s so damned expensive that I can’t do the things I used to enjoy, like furniture and cabinet making. I do miss wood and wood “items”.
For the sake of the environment,it’s a necessity. Forests and jungles need to be protected.
Polished wood is beautiful. I can’t understand people who install wooden fittings in their home, doors, staircases and such like, then, instead of staining or polishing, they slap paint all over them, what a waste
we use wood all we can. the beauty of the grain. tv said the other day, plastic bags are now to be verboten and back to paper. it’s renewable. i thought you said woolen at first. i paired a thermal with a woolen sweater this warm morning and had to skin out of the sweater.
