Could I build a Kayak out of 2 foot Sewer Pipe?

Can I build a Kayak or canoe out of 2 Foot diameter sewer pipe, I am planning to cut the pipe in half long ways so it will be a half cylinder, then I will make the ends more aerodynamic and seal it off. I don’t know where to get this size of pipe, so links would be appreciated.

Not only can you build a Kayak out of 2-foot sewer pipe, you MUST build a Kayak out of 2-foot sewer pipe. That sounds awesome.

It’s possible, but really stupid. Just use wood.

It would be unstable. A kayak has a bit of flatness to it. Also it has a way to put on a “skirt” that keeps the water out.

Hi trace, awesome question and suggestion. I am so sure you could make something work but you will need to have outriggers to prevent it from capsizing. The half round shape of the pipe will simply invert whenever you sit in it. Perhaps some sort of fin arrangement would give a bit more stability.

Good luck with your project and let us know how it goes.

As with oontrete and steel ships, sewer pipe kayak would probably float, BUT, kayaks aren’t particularly stable, and often are used for manuervering. Moreover, it would be staggeringly heavy, and have no bouyancy if it became filled with wate.

My suggestion: make your first attempt using wood, such as is used in economical kayaks.

you can make a kayak out of anything.

yes you can build a boat out of 2′ dia. plastic pipe, but you may loose a lot of strength by cutting it in half, and the result would be more like a canoe unless you decked over the boat.

for some good ideas about building a boat out of plastic pipe take a look at the Rebel Cat sailboat site, it contains ideas on how to form the bow and stern areas of the plastic pipe as well as other info.

you might want ot build a kayak out of two smaller dia pieces of plastic pipe instead of one. this would give you better stability

    hope this helps.

The bottom will be so round that you will find yourself upside down most of the time.

From my experience, does not sound like it would be very stable. The rounder the bottom of the boat, the easier it tips.

It would probably float, and turn pretty easily. It would take a while to get used to though. You could add a stabilizer thing like they have on Hawaiian kayaks.

No idea who sells that sort of pipe.

Trunorth & Dadnbob have it. Your round kayak won’t have any stability. Don’t worry about a kayak skirt, because you won’t be able to roll it back up. Kayaks are incredibly stable upside down!

You could put an outrigger one side of your boat made of a smaller pipe. This would give you some resistance to flipping.

Before you add the outrigger, try it once in a lake without the outrigger. Strictly for educational purposes. :-)

Your boat will track well in a straight line, but it won’t turn.

    Wear your PFD!
