Cardboard Boat Evolution


My triumphant return to the Cardboard Boat building scene after an 8-year hiatus, won Admiral’s Choice in the 2007 Crawdad Days Cardboard Boat Race.

    I’ve seen boats coated with polyurethane before, and they don’t look too pretty. Tends to make the cardboard lose it rigidity. You’d be surprised how well your average exterior latex paint holds up. Just make sure to hit it with a couple of good primer coats, and you should stay pretty dry.

    about how long do these things work? whats do you think about coating them in some polyurethane?

    We folded and taped sections of the hull to act like pontoons. Right around the 1:00 mark you can see the pontoons start to take shape. Even after the race, when we stripped all the pretty cardboard off the sides, it stayed floating because the sides were basically decoration. I paddled all the way back to the starting line on just the base of the boat.
