Canoe camping is my preferred way to camp. It’s peaceful and quiet and an awesome way to get away from it all but if you’ve never tried it, then you need to know what to expect. Paddling, portaging, sleeping and eating on the edge of the shore. There’s nothing really like it. There’s nothing like paddling across a hidden lake that not too many people even get to see. At the right locations you may not even run into another person or group. It’s amazing how tired you can become when trying to recover from an upset canoe and it can happen fairly easily. Canoes are not the most stable craft in the water and I’ve been thrown into the water from them myself. I always make an effort to use dry bags to keep all of my things in and I always clip them to the gunwales of the boat to prevent my belongings from going to the bottom of the lake in the event of an upset. I’ve seen people use garbage bags on canoe trips but that will only keep your things dry from splashing. They’re not very robust and they rip easily and will eventually allow your stuff to get wet, not to mention they won’t prevent your stuff from sinking if you flip. There is nothing like canoeing in the back country with the quiet, peaceful backdrop of the northern pines and the canoes ripple effects on the lake. Next, the morning dew upon the tent, the lurking fog on the lake as you break camp, a moose and calf arrive at waters edge. How about the mysterious Native American pictographs telling stories of long ago, the busy beaver building a new home, or fast running water heard from a portage walking to the next lake. One of the top experiences, in my mind, is the incredible night skies of northern lights and star gazing. Sharing fabulous outdoors exploration by camping, cooking, hiking, fishing, swimming and just relaxing are things stamped in your memories forever. The water is crystal clear; you could read a newspaper on the bottom in 8′ of water. The morning sun feels rejuvenating on your face. The air is as fresh as it can be. A slight breeze puffs up the river and all of a sudden you see thousands of cottonwood blossoms fill the air. It almost looks like snow. My wife calls them tree fairies. I think she gets euphoric out on the river with all that fresh air. Actually, the blossoms or fairies are cottonwood seeds; they have a fuzzy puff of hair like stuff around them and are lighter than a feather. Some are very funny, while others are very skillful. We swim in the rapids when it’s hot, sometimes we tow 2-stacked sit on top kayaks behind our canoe to play in the rapids, fish, explore or do day trips out of camp. I do a little fly fishing from time to time and rapids are a prime spot. We may stay an extra day or two, and then push on to another spot. Canoe or kayak camping is a relaxing way to camp; we are never in a hurry. Canoes and kayaks sometimes turn over or a sudden rainstorm comes up and your rain gear is in the bottom of the pack. No time to pull a “chicken little” thing. Rather than lose a day, we elected to pack up and paddle on. This is where having good rain gear helps the comfort zone. We traveled 5 miles, shot 3 rapids and caught a bunch of bass that day. Late afternoon, the rain stopped, as we neared our planned camping spot. We are often GPS guided. We set up and had another nice night in the neighborhood. It’s not about the money as we are a small mom and pop business. We are hosting a few articles to help them in the transition with out being taken advantage of, like “how to do or how to buy” articles. We also have tips and secrets to share and confessions of all the things that have gone wrong while out in the wild. The most abundant fish that can be found in the BWCAW are walleye, northern pike, small-mouth bass, lake trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and brown trout. Basically, canoeing is an outdoor activity that involves paddling a canoe or kayak either as recreation, transportation or as a sport. Enthusiasts stress that canoeing only uses a paddle to propel your kayak or canoe and human muscle power, nothing more.
