if your 12′ was built after 1972 it should have a cap. plate that states max. hp. for your boat it is probably a 10 hp motor.
as far as recommended hp it will depend on where you plan to use your boat, how heavy you plan to load it, and how fast to want to go.
a 2hp 4stroke will move your boat at about 5 to 6 mph, and do so using very little fuel. it is a light weight motor that will be easy to carry to/from your truck
a 4hp to 6hp will increase your top speed but use more fuel and its heavier.
an 8 hp will give you even more top speed, but use more fuel.
a 10 hp motor may be enough to raise your boat onto a plane, but will use more fuel doing so.
be sure to match your ob to the transom height of your boat,
15″ transom = short shaft motor
20″ transom = long shaft motor
we have a 14′ plywood skiff and use a 2 hp honda for small lake fishing (5 mph max on the lake) and for puttering about, and a 10hp honda for taking the boat out on the sound.
hauling your boat in the back of the pickup will work. to help in getting the boat back in the pu, you could rig a block & tackle system or use a come along.
The transom should have a label stating the maximum recommended horsepower. My guess, no more than 10.
Hassle? How much does the boat weigh? Are you loading it yourself? You try to lift it and tell me. Should be easy for two men.
